What is TournamentFuel?
TournamentFuel is a FREE COLLECTION of short mental performance sessions made available inside NeuroFuel - volleyball's leading mental performance training app.
We know volleyball and we know mental performance. We also know that nationals can be a tough test for both of these things. So, we wanted to make a helpful resource available during this time because we know that ahtletes that are performing to their potential - win or lose - will enjoy the end of the season much more.
What is NeuroFuel?
NeuroFuel is the leading mental performance training app built by volleyball experts for volleyball athletes.
Just as athletes train strength, speed, conditioning, and technical skills, they can also develop confidence, focus, resilience, composure, and emotional control.
NeuroFuel provides tools and training designed to help athletes perform at their best when it matters most.
Our mission is to help athletes develop mental skills that improve performance in sports and serve them long after their athletic careers are over.
Who created NeuroFuel?
NeuroFuel was created by volleyball coaches and mental performance experts - for volleyball athletes. Folks like Kirsten Bernthal Booth (LOVB; former Creighton HC - 3x National Coach of the Year), Dr. Larry Widman (Max Out Mindset; high performance mental coach to champion athletes and teams), Jamie Morrison (Texas A&M - 2025 National Champions, USA Volleyball - three Olympic medals), Angie Oxley Behrens (Creighton; former Nebraska captain and national champion), Craig Dyer (Notre Dame, Creighton, Pitt) and Jen Armson Dyer (USA Volleyball Commissioner Badger Region & USAV Board Member) got us started and they continue to provide guidance while also remaining major voices of support for young athletes developing the mental side of the game.
What is mental performance training?
Mental performance training helps athletes develop confidence, focus, resilience, emotional control, concentration, and the ability to perform consistently under pressure.
Just like physical skills can be trained, mental skills can be practiced and improved over time. Training consists of short (3-5 minutes), audio and video sessions that should be consumed regularly over time. These are not long, lectures and theorhetical presentations. NeuroFuel mental training consists of easy to understand concepts that can be applied immediately, allowing mental strength to be formed over time.
Why does mental performance matter?
Most athletes spend countless hours developing physical skills. Yet many competitions are ultimately influenced by confidence, focus, decision-making, emotional control, resilience, and the ability to handle pressure.
Mental skills often determine whether athletes can consistently perform up to their physical potential.
If you've ever heard someone tell and athlete to "relax", "focus", "forget about it" or "stay calm", you already know what they mean. However, these are actually skills that can be trained and developed so that the athlete hearing these words actually knows what to do in those moments. Training is the way these types of cues have impact.
Is mental performance training the same as sports psychology?
They are related but not identical. Sports psychology is a broad field that includes performance enhancement, mental health considerations, and research.
Mental performance training focuses specifically on practical skills that help athletes improve confidence, focus, resilience, and performance.
Think of mental performance training like a vitamin - something your brain can use in small amounts over time to function, grow and develop.

Why should coaches care about mental performance training?
Coaches frequently encounter confidence issues, performance anxiety, communication challenges, and athletes struggling to recover from mistakes. Mental performance training provides practical tools to address these challenges.
Does NeuroFuel replace coaching?
No. NeuroFuel is designed to support and enhance what coaches are already doing. Coaches remain the leaders of their teams.
How do teams use NeuroFuel?
There are many ways teams use NeuroFuel. Some like to use it at the start of practice. Others will use it at the end. Thre is really no right or wrong way to use the app, as long as you are consistent. One of the strongest benefits of NeuroFuel is that any of the sessions can be used as a conversation piece between athletes and coaches. This discussions shape shared language that can be used in important moments that help athletes play with confidence.
What results do coaches typically see?
With mental training, results can vary. However, one of the biggest factors in seeing improvement is consistency and support from a coach and/or parent. Mental training can be intimidating if you don't take a little time to understand the basic concepts. Once an athlete understands what it is and how it can help them, they are more likely to stay consistent and realize the benefits.

Questions Parents Often Ask
Why should parents care about mental performance training?
Most parents want to see their children become confident, resilient individuals that are able to demonstrate emotional control, leadership, self-discipline, and stress management in difficult situations. Historically, sports participation has exposed young people to circumstances that gave them to opportunity to start to develop some of these attributes. NeuroFuel helps athletes specifically train these techniques intentionally, allowing them to apply them in sports and more broadly in life.
Will this help my child outside of sports?
Yes. The same skills that help athletes perform in competition often help them navigate school, relationships, leadership opportunities, and future careers.
Is NeuroFuel a substitute for therapy or counseling?
No. NeuroFuel focuses on performance-related mental skills and is not a substitute for mental health treatment, counseling, therapy, or medical care. If there is concern around your child's mental well-being, we absolutely encourage seeking guidance from a qualified professional.
Is this only for elite athletes?
Not at all! Athletes at all levels can benefit from learning how to build confidence, focus, resilience, and composure. Some of the greatest changes have occurred with individuals that have not yet developed elite physical skills.
How much time does it require?
Not as much as you would think. Most of our sessions are 3-6 minutes. Unlike nearly every other app, we do not recommend spending extensive amounts of time in the app. We would rather see consist short usage than infrequent long usage. Think of it like a weight room for physical strength. Muscles are formed through consistent routines over time - not spending all day lifting a few times. Mental strength works the same way.
